Can trained school staff give insulin?
With limits
A district or charter school may designate two or more school employees as voluntary diabetes care assistants, approved by the parent, who may give insulin when no licensed health professional is immediately available (A.R.S. § 15-344.01(C)). The policy is optional for the school. (azleg.gov)
Can trained school staff give glucagon?
With limits
Voluntary diabetes care assistants with a signed training statement may give glucagon in an emergency when no licensed health professional is immediately available (A.R.S. § 15-344.01(C)). Schools may stock glucagon under a standing order (A.R.S. § 15-344.01(E)). (azleg.gov)
Can a student carry supplies and manage diabetes at school?
With limits
A district or charter school may adopt policies that let students manage diabetes in the classroom, on school grounds, and at school-sponsored activities and carry their supplies, with a signed diabetes medical management plan (A.R.S. § 15-344.01(A), (B)). The statute makes these policies optional. (azleg.gov)
The American Diabetes Association’s Arizona page reads this differently: ADA answers yes and does not say that the statute lets each district or charter school choose whether to adopt the self-management policy.
Does the state publish a diabetes care plan form or guidelines?
No source found
A.R.S. § 15-344.01 refers to a diabetes medical management plan signed by a health professional, but no state form or state school diabetes guideline was found. The Department of Education school health page refused automated fetches. We found no statute or state agency page that answers this for Arizona. Ask the school nurse or the state Department of Education, and see the American Diabetes Association’s Arizona page.
Can a student keep a phone for the CGM in class?
Yes
District and charter school phone policies must let a student use a wireless communication device when the student needs it because of a medical condition (A.R.S. § 15-120.05, HB 2484 of 2025). The statute does not name diabetes or CGM. (azleg.gov)
Also in Arizona
A school employee may refuse to be a voluntary diabetes care assistant without penalty. A.R.S. § 15-120.05 was added by HB 2484 (2025, chapter 53). (azleg.gov)
Federal law applies in every state
Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act can cover a student with diabetes at a public school in every state, whatever the state law says; a 504 plan is where the student’s care at school is written down. The federal rules, with sources.
